First Yoga Class Saturday!
(scroll to the bottom for details)
This Saturday, following Chi Gong with Lien, I will be teaching yoga at the beach! I realize I announced it three Saturday's ago, then two, thus I truly apologize for false statements and the delay. After wrapping up a summer of work and finally completing my 200 + hours of teacher training, I told Lien I would begin teaching the week after her workshop. This abrupt pause in a continuous year awakened a deep longing within to return to my own mat and regain my balance. Reconciling the past six months of knowledge with my regular practice has allowed me to regain my peace, so thank you for understanding.
I am so lucky to have stumbled upon YogaWell, a truly amazing community and vessel for this ancient practice and beautiful way of life. YogaWell relays the teachings of Raja yoga, also known as Royal Yoga, Royal Union or Classical Yoga. Raja Yoga cultivates the mind through meditation to further one's acquaintance with reality and achieve liberation. In the context of Hindu Philosophy, Raja Yoga is known simply as Yoga. It is sometimes referred to as Ashtanga (eight-limbed) yoga:
This is not to be confused with Ashtanga Vinyasa, a strict hybrid style created by Pattabhi Jois in the 1940s that includes a vinyasa-style flow between every pose to further link breath and movement.
My training in Hatha and Eclectic yoga refers to the asanas, or poses within Raja Yoga. As you can see from the above image, asanas are a stage of physical purification to prepare the body for higher mediation. Hatha is composed of the words ha and tha meaning sun and moon, referring to the solar nadi (or energy channel) and the lunar channel (ida) in the subtle body, the ethereal elements that compose our non-physical being (more on this in the next post). When the two words are combined, they take on a new meaning – forceful. Yoga means to yoke or unite, thus Hatha Yoga is meant to join together the sun (masculine & active) energy with the moon (feminine & receptive) energy within us all, thus producing greater balance and power as an individual.
Eclectic refers to all other styles of yoga incoprorated in our training, including Iyengar, Kundalini, Restorative, Yin Yoga, and yoga therapy. For more specific information on my training, check out YogaWell's calendar .
Satuday's class will be for all ages and all levels. It will be relaxing and rejuvenating – a lovely cocktail to refresh from the week and say hello to the weekend. The beach is an incredible place to practice yoga, as the ebb and flow of the tide is our true teacher.
